Frequently Asked Questions
-
Is there an Application? If you are interested in a Cooper Ridge Aussies puppy, please fill out the client questionnaire application on our website and we will contact you. If you are approved for a Cooper Ridge puppy, the next step would be placing a deposit before/when the puppies are born.
-
Is the deposit refundable? No, the deposit is not refundable. It is transferable to future litters, if you do not choose to get a future puppy it is still non-refundable. If for whatever reason you are no longer deemed a fit for a puppy from our program, your deposit is STILL non-refundable. No exceptions.
-
How much is a puppy?Prices are for Pet/Companions with Limited Registration with any registry. Spay/Neuter Contract is required to be signed and sent back before any pup will be reserved. Full registration is an additional cost to approved breeding homes. Please contact us for information on pricing of puppies.
-
What are your acceptable payment methods? We accept payment via Zelle, Venmo, Cashapp, Gooddog or cash.
-
Do you do payment plans? No as much as we would love to, after the first one we had agreed to the puppy was never picked up and it was past 8 weeks, which in turn backfired on us to now find a whole new home for the puppy.
-
If I am on the waitlist, when can I pick my puppy?Usually within 72 hours of them being born, and then we open it to those not on the waitlist.
-
What happens if I don’t find the perfect puppy in the litter I wanted to pick from?Often we do repeat crosses, you could wait until the next time we have a litter from the same parents OR choose from a different litter in our program. We can not guarantee eye color or coat color each litter.
-
Will my puppy be crate or potty trained when I pick up him/her?We start all our puppies on crate introduction and indoor potty training while they are in our care. However, this is a lengthy process and requires work by the new owners. We do not guarantee mastery from our puppies on the training skills listed above, however they do have a basic knowledge of those skills.
-
Do you give vaccines yourselves?"A licensed veterinarian does all of our vet work including vaccinations, and health exams. All puppies come with health certificates from our vet.
-
Do you do health testing on your breeding dogs?YES! All of our breeding dogs go through a variety of Genetic Tests before we ever consider using them in our program. We do all the recommended health testing for the Aussie Breed. Our dogs have Pennhip/OFA Hip testing, and the entire Australian Shepherd Genetic Pannel through Embark plus 100+ genetic diseases. We will be adding thyroid screenings and OFA cerf testing this year as well.
-
Does the health guarantee include parvo? All puppies come with a health guarantee against genetic diseases. This does not include communicable diseases (Parvo, Distemper, Internal/External Parasites, Heartworms, Kennel cough, Giardia or Coccidia).
-
Are puppies with Limited Registration sold on a spay/neuter contract?Yes, but we require them to wait until they are 24months of age before they can be fixed for the best interest of the puppies well being. Early spay/neuter is harmful to your pet and we do not recommend it. If the pet is fixed before the age of a minimum 24 months the health gaurantee is null and void (unless there is a medical reason that the pet is spayed/neutered before that age).
-
When should I take my puppy to the vet when he / she arrives? As stated in our contract, we encourage our clients to take their new puppy to a veterinarian within 3-days of pick up. Our vet checks all the puppies before departure, but we feel, for peace of mind for the client, it is best to have your vet check the puppies as well. We do provide you with 30 days free insurance through our partnership with Trupanion Pet insurance.
-
What about transport? We prefer people to meet our puppies so there are no (or fewer) surprises at any end. We are willing to drive moderate distances (~8-12 hours) to meet prospective owners if you reimburse us for our gas and time. We are located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Again reimbursement for extra time and travel is necessary. Ela is a certified flight nanny and can fly your puppy to you at an additional cost as well.
-
How often should I groom my dog?Aussies require weekly brushing (more to avoid excess shedding) and we typically bath bi-monthly.
-
Should I shave my Aussie?Never EVER shave your Aussie! PLEASE! Contrary to popular belief, shaving your Aussie actually makes them HOTTER! Aussies are a dual coated breed and that dual coat actually acts as an insulator, keeping them cool. If you shave their coat, it messes up their insulation system and causes them to be warmer. Never let a groomer advise you differently. If they have ”matts”, cut them out, do not shave the area.
-
Gluing ears? When teething, Aussies ears tend to get a bit crazy. Gluing the ears down helps hold them in place while cartilage grows along the top of the ear. “Button” ears which fall forward against the face are the typical ear set for Aussies. “Rose” ears hang off to the sides, roll back and are lifted from the face. “Prick” ears are considered a severe fault in Aussies and stand straight up over their head. Gluing ears is strictly for cosmetic purposes. Gluing does not hurt the dog and the glue is not permanent. The glue goes away and the ears become detached quickly. Some puppies may need multiple gluing sessions depending on how long the glue lasts.
-
What if we can no longer care for our aussie?Every Cooper Ridge autralian shepherd that we breed is guaranteed a home for life with us if needed. We believe that if we bring a dog into this world, we have the responsibility to make sure that dog always has a loving home and does not end up unwanted, abandoned, and spending its last days alone in a shelter run.
-
What rearing methods do you use?We raise our puppies on puppy culture, early neurological stimulation, early scent introduction, and plenty of love!
-
What food do you feed the puppies?Purina pro plan puppy - we recommend if you are continuing with purina pro plan and being active to have your puppy/dog on purina pro plan sport 30/20.
-
Do you keep puppy tails?Yes we do! We have had NBT's in our program, which is the only nub's we have had
